TubaMania International
Conference 1995

TubaMania Australia has been presenting annual concerts, conferences and festivals for the tuba and low brass since 1990. In 1995 TubaMania Australia and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra presented the inaugural TubaMania International Conference and Solo Competitions.

This highly successful Conference attracted hundreds of low brass performers and enthusiasts worldwide and was hosted by Steve Rosse at the ABC's Eugene Goosens Hall and the Sydney Opera House.

Events included masterclasses, recitals, private lessons, competitions for tuba and trombone and orchestra concerts (including a performance of Das Rheingold by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra). Some of the world's finest brass musicians and clinicians from around Australia and overseas were featured as guest artists and speakers, including:

The TubaMania International Tuba Competition attracted competitors from six countries and the winners were:

Big Guns and Winners!

Generous cash prizes were given to the winner. The First Prize Winner, Stephane Labeyrie, also received the TubaMania Special Prize which was an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the 1996 Markneukirchen International Competition in Germany.

He won First Prize there and has since been offered many International solo engagements. The TubaMania Second Prize Winner, Jozsef Bazsinka of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, released his first solo CD the following year. Third Prize Winner Brendon Lukin recently won a First Prize at an International competition in the USA and also played with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The Major Sponsor of the 1995 Conference was Germany's Gerhard Meinl of Wenzel Meinl GmbH and B&S Musikinstrumentfabrik. Many of his instruments were sold from the display stand during the conference and orders for more were taken.

Media coverage of the conference included article in two of Sydney's major newspapers as well as newspapers, magazines and journals in Germany, France, Switzerland and the USA.

In 1997 TubaMania presented a short festival with guest tubist, Floyd Cooley from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. TubaMania Australia was also currently involved in the organisation and presentation of the 1997 Verso il Millennio International Competitions in Italy and is active on the planning committee for the 1998 Tuba Euphonium Conference to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
