Steve Rosse, Tuba
The American Steve Rosse enjoys a unique career as orchestral tubist, tuba soloist, chamber musician, and educator. He has been Principal Tuba of the Sydney Symphony since 1990 and has worked with / performed with the symphony orchestras of Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Diego, and the Academy of St Martin-in-the Fields. Prior to 1990 Rosse held Principal/ Solo Tuba positions with the RAI Tornio Radio Symphony and World Symphony Orchestras in Europe and with the New Mexico Symphony in Albuquerque, USA. As a soloist Rosse spends over two months a year touring the world, including annual recital/ concerto engagements in Japan, Thailand, and Australia. He has performed concertos with professional orchestras on four continents including five solo appearances with the Sydney Symphony and a recent performance of the John Williams Tuba Concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan in a program entitled "The Tuba Kings of the World", and a performance of Philip Sparke's Tuba Concerto at the 2007 Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago with the NSW State Schools Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SSSWE). Rosse has won prizes at many international solo competitions, including San Diego Musical Merit, Australia's ABC Young (Instrumental) Performer of the Year, and in Markneukirchen, Germany. He has since served on jury panels of many international competitions throughout the world and is in the process of recording his first solo CD this year. Rosse
is currently Lecturer of Tuba and Brass Studies at the University of Sydney
Conservatorium of Music and also teaches annually at the Dolce International
Academy in Japan, and is a Visiting Professor at Silpakron University in
Thailand. He was also a recent
Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore and the Milan
Conservatory of Music in Italy, and has coached the tuba and low brass students
at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Rosse's students have been very
successful and have performed with orchestras across the planet ranging from the
Tasmanian Symphony to the Berlin and London Philharmonic Orchestras, and many now
occupy full-time major performing orchestra and band positions throughout
Europe, Australia, and Asia. Many
have also won First Prizes at prestigious international competitions in the USA
and Europe. As
an educator Rosse is especially dedicated to
the development of Australian and Asian student and young professional tuba
players, and since 1995 has hosted/ directed
several TubaMania International Conferences, Camps,
and Festivals throughout Australia (www.tubamania.com)
. Rosse directed and co-hosted his
first Asian TubaMania Festival in Bangkok earlier
in 2008 in Thailand, featuring world-class tuba players/ educators
from Europe and Australia and attracted nearly one hundred student/
professional participants from throughout
Asia. Steve
(born November 1964) studied with Brent Dutton in his home town of San Diego,
California as a high school student, followed by four years of study with Daniel
Perantoni at Arizona State University (1983-87).
His other primary teachers include Arnold Jacobs and Roger Bobo in the
USA, and Mel Culbertson, Michael Lind and Robert Tucci in Europe.
